UNESCO Calls for Responsible Use of AI in Education and Equal Access to Technology

UNESCO has called for a balanced approach to integrating artificial intelligence into education, emphasizing the need to manage its risks while ensuring equal access to knowledge and technology.

The UN agency said AI has significant potential to improve teaching and learning methods and help address educational challenges, but warned that rapid technological development could deepen digital inequalities if not implemented through a human-centered approach.

UNESCO stressed the importance of making AI accessible to all and preventing the technology from becoming a new source of inequality between individuals, communities, and countries.

The remarks were made during an event at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on September 16, which brought together more than 700 students and AI experts to discuss the future of education amid technological advances.

Participants highlighted the benefits of AI tools in supporting diverse learners, including students who previously lacked access to personalized educational assistance. However, experts also warned against excessive reliance on AI and stressed the need to protect learners’ independence and critical skills.
