New Book Explores Islamic, Christian Perspectives on Ethical Relationship Between Humans, Animals

A new book published in Canada brings together a Muslim researcher and a Christian priest in an interfaith dialogue examining the ethical relationship between humans, animals, and the environment from Islamic and Christian perspectives.

Titled Human-Animal: Ethical Relationship in Islam & Christianity, the book is the result of a dialogue between Islamic studies scholar Dr. Yahya Jahangiri and Anglican priest and peace activist Father Dave Smith.

Presented in a question-and-answer format, the book explores areas of agreement and difference between Islamic and Christian teachings on environmental ethics, animal welfare, and humanity’s responsibilities toward other living beings. It draws on religious texts and traditions from both Shiite Islamic and Christian sources.

The authors discuss contemporary issues including environmental responsibility, the ethics of meat consumption, human interactions with animals, and the importance of compassion and care toward all creatures.

The publication follows an international comparative studies conference on ethics in Islam and Christianity, which brought together scholars and thinkers from 25 countries to promote dialogue on shared moral concerns.

The book aims to expand Muslim-Christian dialogue beyond traditional theological discussions by addressing modern ethical and environmental challenges, highlighting the potential role of Abrahamic faith traditions in responding to global issues.
