The death toll from an attack on a historic police compound in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has risen to at least 31, with more than 100 people wounded, a Pakistani police official said.

Authorities said the attack, which occurred on Friday, involved a suicide bombing followed by an armed assault on the police facility. Security forces engaged in clashes with the attackers, with reports indicating that some militants remained inside parts of the compound.

The incident caused heavy casualties among police personnel and civilians, while emergency teams continued treating the injured and security operations remained ongoing around the site.

Kohat, a city in northwestern Pakistan with a population of around 220,000, has faced security challenges in recent years, as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has witnessed repeated attacks targeting security forces, government facilities, and civilians.

Officials warned that the casualty figures could change as rescue operations and security efforts continue. No group has been officially confirmed as responsible for the attack at the time of reporting.
