Al-Abbas Holy Shrine Begins Planting One Million Trees to Establish Green Belt Around Karbala

The Al-Abbas Holy Shrine announced the start of the first phase of the project, which is being implemented within the Al-Awali agricultural farm, covering an area of approximately 50,000 dunams.

According to a statement by the shrine, the trees designated for the project have been cultivated and prepared in its own nurseries to support the large-scale afforestation plan.

The green belt project aims to increase vegetation coverage around Karbala and contribute to reducing the effects of dust storms, sand encroachment, and desertification. It is also expected to improve air quality, moderate temperatures, and support environmental diversity in the surrounding areas.

The initiative comes amid growing environmental challenges in Iraq, including rising temperatures, declining vegetation, expanding desert areas, and frequent dust storms.

The Al-Abbas Holy Shrine stated that the project is part of its broader environmental and agricultural initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and developing green areas around Karbala through long-term tree-planting programs.
