UNESCO Chooses “Celebrating Dialogue and Mutual Understanding” as the Theme for the World Arabic Language Day 2026

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced the selection of “Celebrating Dialogue and Mutual Understanding” as the theme for the World Arabic Language Day 2026, which will be held on December 18th at the organization’s headquarters in Paris.

This year’s theme focuses on the role of the Arabic language in building bridges of communication between peoples and cultures, its historical contribution to the transfer of knowledge, ideas, sciences, and literature, in addition to highlighting its linguistic and cultural diversity, oral traditions, and continuous interaction with different languages and cultures.

The celebration is organized in collaboration with the Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Foundation and the Permanent Delegation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to UNESCO, as part of efforts to enhance the presence of the Arabic language in international forums and to underscore its status as a language of knowledge, culture, and dialogue.

The program includes a session entitled “Arabic Language: A Medium of Exchange and Cultural Dialogue,” which addresses the role the Arabic language has played over the centuries as a bridge between civilizations, and its contribution to the transmission of knowledge, literature, sciences, and artistic traditions across different regions of the world.

The program also includes a session on the “Arab Latinos” initiative, which explores the documentary heritage related to the Arab presence in Latin America and the Caribbean, the challenges related to preserving documents and making them accessible to researchers, alongside exploring ways to strengthen studies and cooperation in this field.

The celebration also highlights the diversity of the Arabic language in its levels, dialects, and various forms of expression, considering them as a source of vitality and creativity that enriches the language, alongside the role of Arabic-speaking communities in preserving heritage, traditions, and cultural expressions.

The World Arabic Language Day celebrations serve as an international platform that annually brings together scholars, linguists, writers, artists, intellectuals, and policymakers to discuss issues related to the Arabic language and to promote its presence in the fields of knowledge, education, and culture.

World Arabic Language Day is celebrated on December 18th each year, an occasion that highlights the contributions of the Arabic language to human civilization and its role in promoting linguistic diversity, culture, dialogue, and understanding among peoples.
