Norway: Interfaith Dialogue Discusses Identity, Discrimination, and Hate Against Muslims

The Norwegian Islamic Dialogue Network participated in the activities of “Arendalsuka,” the annual public debate forum in Norway, where a number of issues related to religious identity, freedom of expression, discrimination, and hate speech against Muslims were discussed.

The discussions addressed the challenges faced by young Muslims in Norwegian society, particularly intolerance and discrimination, as well as the issues concerning the expression of religious and cultural identity and ways to enhance understanding and coexistence among the different components of society.

During a session titled “When Hate Against Groups is Disguised as Religious Criticism,” participants debated the boundaries between legitimate criticism of beliefs and religions and the discourse that turns into discrimination or incitement and hatred targeting an entire religious group.

Representatives of the Norwegian Islamic Dialogue Network emphasized that confronting extremism and hate speech requires enhancing dialogue and cooperation between religious institutions and social and official entities, contributing to reducing divisions and promoting societal cohesion.

Participants also stressed that the role of religious institutions is not limited to providing places of worship and practicing rituals, but extends to participating in addressing social challenges, preventing extremism, and building bridges of communication among different groups.

The Norwegian Islamic Dialogue Network works to promote interfaith and intercultural dialogue, support the values of understanding and coexistence, and highlight the role of religious institutions as partners in enhancing security and social cohesion within Norwegian society.
