Dearborn Calls on Residents to Ignore Anti-Muslim Protest and Avoid Confrontations

Officials in the city of Dearborn, Michigan, have urged residents to avoid engaging with anti-Muslim activists planning to hold a protest coinciding with the city council meeting, emphasizing that ignoring provocations is the best way to maintain security and prevent escalation.

In a video message, Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin stated that residents should only attend the council meeting if they have business or issues that necessitate their presence, noting that, in his assessment, the protestors aim to provoke reactions and attract attention.

Shahin added that the police are prepared to handle the protest and secure the community, urging residents to leave security matters to the officers and to avoid confrontations that might endanger them or provide instigators an opportunity to create chaos.

The call comes ahead of a demonstration named “March of Christian Crusaders in Dearborn,” organized by right-wing activists, amid local concerns over possible provocations targeting the Muslim community in the city.

Dearborn City Council President Mike Sareini also urged not to give participants in the protest a platform or opportunity to cause trouble, stressing the importance of avoiding unnecessary gatherings and confrontations.

Dearborn has a significant Arab and Muslim presence and has experienced anti-Muslim protests and incidents over the past decades, including the desecration of copies of the Quran and demonstrations where participants carried messages and symbols deemed offensive and provocative by the local community.

The developments occur amid fears of increasing Islamophobia and anti-Muslim rhetoric across the United States, with Dearborn officials emphasizing that maintaining calm and not responding to provocations are the best means to thwart those seeking to incite division within the city.
