Five Million Mourners Gather in Najaf to Commemorate Martyrdom of Prophet Muhammad

The courtyards of the Holy Shrine of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) in Najaf were filled with mourning and devotion as millions of visitors arrived to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).

According to reports, around five million pilgrims visited Najaf during the occasion. Haider al-Isawi, a member of the administrative board of the Holy Shrine of Imam Ali, said that approximately 300 mourning processions and 500 service caravans were active around the shrine to support the large crowds. He added that 16,000 blocks of ice were distributed among service stations as part of preparations for pilgrims.

Mourners from different Iraqi provinces and Muslim communities around the world gathered near the shrine of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) to offer condolences to the Commander of the Faithful, regarded by devotees as the first successor of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).

The Alawi Shrine’s staff mobilized extensive service, health, and organizational resources to welcome visitors. The programs included mourning assemblies, elegies, religious gatherings, and the distribution of blessed items, providing pilgrims with a secure and spiritual environment to perform acts of mourning and worship.

Mourning caravans from the holy city of Karbala also participated in the ceremonies, turning the shrine’s courtyards into centers of remembrance and devotion. Participants recited religious chants and expressed their commitment to the Prophet and his household, highlighting the deep spiritual connection between the cities of Najaf and Karbala in preserving religious traditions.

The ceremonies also witnessed the participation of a Bahraini mourning procession, whose members gathered at the shrine of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) to perform elegies and express their devotion to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them).

The presence of people from different generations, including youth and elderly mourners, reflected the continuation of these religious traditions across generations. Organizers and participants emphasized that such gatherings reinforce religious identity, solidarity among Muslims, and the values of loyalty, compassion, and remembrance.

The mourning ceremonies concluded with collective prayers for the hastening of the reappearance of Imam al-Mahdi (may Allah hasten his noble reappearance), as well as prayers for relief from difficulties and the well-being of Muslims around the world.
