Calls Grow to Provide Services for Afghan Arbaeen Visitors Arriving Through Al-Sheeb Border Crossing

Large numbers of Afghan visitors arrived at the Al-Sheeb border crossing in Iraq’s Maysan province on Saturday to take part in religious visits to the holy shrines, prompting calls for additional humanitarian services amid high temperatures.

Videos circulated by local media and social media platforms showed large groups of visitors gathered near the border crossing while completing entry procedures into Iraq. Observers said many visitors were in need of drinking water, food and basic services, particularly during the hot midday hours.

Reports indicated that delays in the arrival of some groups were linked to administrative procedures and travel restrictions faced along their routes before reaching the Iraqi border, causing large numbers of visitors to arrive at the crossing at the same time.

Activists called on Hussaini service convoys and charitable groups to support the visitors at Al-Sheeb by providing cold water, meals and essential assistance as part of the spirit of service associated with the Arbaeen season.

Afghan visitors are among the largest groups participating in the annual Arbaeen pilgrimage, with many travelling long distances through several countries to reach Iraq and participate in the major religious gathering that attracts millions of visitors from around the world.
