Malaysia Pauses Rohingya Refugee Return Plan If Safety Risks Emerge

Malaysia has announced that it will halt any plan to return around 5,000 Rohingya refugees to Myanmar if authorities determine that their lives could be at risk or that they may face persecution upon return.

The decision comes amid growing public pressure and tensions between some local communities and Rohingya refugees living in Malaysia. Officials said the government is reviewing the security situation before taking any further steps regarding the proposed returns.

According to Reuters, Malaysian Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the Foreign Ministry and Home Ministry are conducting a detailed assessment of conditions facing the refugees, including potential risks related to their safety and humanitarian situation.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had previously referred to the possibility of repatriating the Rohingya refugees to Myanmar. However, government officials stressed that Malaysia’s international obligations require ensuring the protection and security of refugees, and that any credible threat would prevent the implementation of the plan.

The Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim ethnic minority from Myanmar, have faced decades of persecution and displacement, with hundreds of thousands fleeing to neighboring countries following military operations and violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
