Iraq Records Unprecedented Internet Traffic During Arbaeen Pilgrimage, Generating Significant State Revenue

Iraq recorded unprecedented milestones in internet bandwidth and telecommunications activity during the Arbaeen pilgrimage season, as strengthened digital infrastructure supported the communication needs of millions of pilgrims across the country.

According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Minister of Communications Mustafa Sand announced that the country’s international internet traffic capacity reached a historic level of 8.63 terabits per second during the pilgrimage period.

The minister also reported that telecommunications networks recorded more than 4.093 million incoming international calls and approximately 3.56 million outgoing international calls during the same period.

Sand said the high volume of digital traffic and telecommunications services generated significant financial revenues, with the majority collected through the Communications and Media Commission, while the remaining revenues were directed through the Ministry of Communications to the state treasury.

The Iraqi Ministry of Communications had worked to strengthen and expand communication infrastructure ahead of the Arbaeen pilgrimage to ensure stable internet services and facilitate digital connectivity for visitors, service providers, and institutions involved in managing the large-scale event.

Officials described the achievement as evidence of Iraq’s growing technical readiness to support one of the world’s largest annual gatherings and manage the exceptional demand placed on telecommunications networks during the pilgrimage season.
