WHO Warns of Disease Outbreak Risks Following Deadly Floods in Nuristan

The World Health Organization (WHO) office in Afghanistan has warned of the risk of disease outbreaks following the devastating floods in the eastern parts of the country, urging residents in affected areas to strictly follow health guidelines to prevent illnesses caused by contaminated water and food.
The organization issued a series of recommendations for communities impacted by the floods, emphasizing the importance of using only clean and safe drinking water and avoiding the consumption of food that has come into contact with floodwaters.
The WHO also advised families to store food in safe, covered locations and to regularly wash their hands with soap and clean water to reduce the spread of infectious diseases. Residents were further encouraged to keep drinking water in clean containers placed in secure areas, while patients were advised to drink sufficient fluids to prevent dehydration.
The health warning follows flash floods that struck Afghanistan on Monday, July 19, causing significant human losses and extensive damage in the provinces of Nuristan, Nangarhar, and Laghman. The city of Parun, the capital of Nuristan province, was reported to be among the worst-affected areas.
According to the latest figures, at least 23 people have been killed and around 80 others injured in the floods, while dozens remain missing as rescue and search operations continue.
The WHO stressed that maintaining hygiene measures, ensuring access to safe water, and following food safety recommendations are essential steps to prevent further health crises in flood-affected communities.
