EU Gender Pay Gap Persists as Women Earn Nearly €3,900 Less Annually Than Men

Recent European data shows that the gender pay gap remains a significant challenge across the European Union, with female workers earning an average of nearly €3,900 less per year than male workers. Trade unions are calling for faster implementation of pay transparency rules to help reduce workplace discrimination and promote equal pay.

According to data from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, women’s average gross hourly earnings are 11.1% lower than men’s, meaning women earn about €88.9 for every €100 earned by men. The European Trade Union Confederation estimates that around 92.5 million working women collectively lose more than €358 billion annually due to the pay gap, although the scale of inequality varies significantly between member states.

Finland, Austria, Germany, and Sweden record annual losses exceeding €5,000 per female worker, while Luxembourg remains the only EU country where women’s average wages are higher than men’s. Belgium, Romania, and Poland report significantly smaller pay differences compared with several other European countries.

The European Trade Union Confederation is urging EU governments to fully implement pay transparency regulations designed to improve salary disclosure and help employees identify cases of discrimination. However, most member states have missed the deadline for introducing the new rules.

Union officials have warned that delays in applying the measures could prolong existing inequalities, stressing that even a limited reduction in the gender pay gap would provide substantial financial benefits for millions of working women.

Across the EU, the gender pay gap ranges from -0.8% in Luxembourg, where women earn slightly more than men on average, to 18.8% in Estonia, highlighting ongoing challenges in achieving equal pay between women and men in Europe’s labor market.
