Devastating Floods Hit Afghanistan and Pakistan, Leaving Dozens Dead and Missing

Heavy rains and flash floods in Afghanistan and Pakistan have killed, injured and displaced dozens of people, while rescue teams continue search operations amid warnings of worsening humanitarian conditions in affected areas.

In Afghanistan, disaster management authorities reported that floods in Baroon, the capital of Nuristan province, have killed at least 20 people and injured around 80 others, with more than 100 people still missing. The floods caused widespread damage to homes, businesses, public facilities, bridges and communication networks. Officials said the toll remains preliminary and could rise as rescue efforts continue.

In Pakistan, a vehicle carrying Afghan refugees returning to Afghanistan was swept away by floodwaters in Landi Kotal, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Rescue teams recovered the bodies of three passengers, while efforts to locate other missing individuals are ongoing despite difficult weather conditions.

The incident comes as Pakistan continues a new phase of deportations of Afghan refugees, forcing thousands of families to return under challenging humanitarian circumstances. Aid groups have raised concerns that ongoing heavy rains and flooding could increase risks for displaced communities during their return journey.
