Iraq Intensifies Security, Service Preparations Ahead of Arbaeen Pilgrimage as Millions Begin Journey to Karbala

The Higher Committee for Million-Visitor Pilgrimages has ordered the immediate implementation of security and service plans designed to ensure the safe movement of pilgrims during Arbaeen. The committee’s chairman and Deputy Commander of Joint Operations, Lieutenant General Qais al-Muhammadawi, chaired a coordination meeting in Najaf attended by security commanders, intelligence officials, technical teams, and representatives of the provinces involved in securing the pilgrimage routes.

Al-Muhammadawi reviewed the final security arrangements and instructed authorities to begin field operations, strengthen coordination between security agencies, address remaining obstacles, and adopt flexible plans to respond to changing circumstances. He stressed the importance of traffic management, civil defense deployment, awareness campaigns, and cooperation with local governments to ensure smooth movement and safety for visitors.

Meanwhile, the Imam Hussein Holy Shrine organized a specialized first-aid training course for members and volunteers of its security department as part of preparations for Arbaeen. The program trained 100 participants in emergency response skills, including CPR, treatment of burns and fractures, bleeding control, choking cases, seizures, and health risks caused by high temperatures.

Millions of pilgrims have already begun walking toward Karbala from different Iraqi provinces, including large groups departing from Basra and passing through areas such as Al-Deir district. Pilgrims from countries including Iran, Kuwait, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Lebanon are also joining the annual pilgrimage, while Hussaini processions along the routes continue providing food, water, accommodation, medical assistance, and guidance services.

Religious institutions are also expanding their preparations. The Abbas Holy Shrine launched its second annual gathering for female religious guides, involving hundreds of participants from various provinces. The program focuses on religious education, communication skills, and ethical guidelines to enhance services provided to female pilgrims during Arbaeen.

Across Iraqi provinces, preparations for supporting Hussaini service processions are continuing. In Dhi Qar, officials announced the completion of logistical arrangements, including the preparation of hospitality tents and supplies along pilgrimage routes. More than 838 Hussaini processions have been established between Basra and Muthanna to serve visitors.

In Maysan, the Petroleum Products Company completed plans to ensure fuel supplies for service processions, increasing the quantities of petroleum products, kerosene, and liquid gas available during the pilgrimage season. Additional support measures include providing ice and logistical assistance in Karbala to meet the needs of the large number of visitors expected during the peak days of Arbaeen.

The Imam Hussein Media Group is also continuing field coverage of the pilgrimage through its multilingual channels, providing live broadcasts, reports, and updates documenting pilgrims’ journeys and the services offered along the roads to Karbala.
