Moroccan Journalist Ali Lmrabet Released After Arrest, Sparking Debate Over Press Freedom
————————————–
Moroccan authorities arrested journalist and political commentator Ali Lmrabet on July 12 after he arrived at Tangier airport from Spain, where he has been living. The arrest prompted calls from international press organizations, including Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), for his immediate release.
According to Morocco’s public prosecutor’s office, Lmrabet was detained based on previous legal notices related to online publications allegedly containing defamatory statements and offenses against individuals and institutions. Authorities said the case was linked to suspected violations under Moroccan law, while Lmrabet and press freedom advocates argued that the action was connected to his critical journalism.
Lmrabet, a French-Moroccan journalist known for his criticism of Moroccan authorities, has a long history of disputes with the state. He was previously imprisoned in 2003 and later banned from practicing journalism in Morocco for 10 years following earlier convictions.
The arrest renewed concerns among rights groups about the state of press freedom in Morocco. Organizations defending journalists said the case reflects broader challenges facing independent media, while Moroccan authorities maintained that the proceedings were part of a legal investigation rather than restrictions on journalism.
On July 15, Moroccan prosecutors ordered Lmrabet’s release after questioning him, although the investigation remains ongoing and possible legal consequences will be determined after its completion.
