56 Bahraini Political Prisoners Released After Over Decade in Detention, Welcomed by Supporters

Dozens of Bahraini human rights advocates and political activists have been released after spending more than 10 years in prison under the country’s ruling authorities.

The 56 prisoners, who had been held under the so-called “open prisons” programme, were transferred to the Al-Hamala centre before returning to their families.

According to Al Jazeera, the releases were met with widespread public celebrations and welcoming gatherings in several areas across Bahrain.

Bahraini activists described the move as a result of years of continued advocacy and resistance by members of the country’s Shia community against what they describe as government repression policies.
