UN Warns of Deadly Impact of Severe Funding Shortfall in Afghanistan Mine Clearance Program

The continued contamination of Afghan land with explosive remnants of war from decades of conflict is still endangering the lives of millions of people across the country.

Reduced funding for humanitarian agencies has seriously slowed efforts to clear vulnerable areas of mines and unexploded ordnance.

According to Russia Today, citing the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the mine clearance program in Afghanistan is facing a severe funding shortage. Of the $14.5 million required, only $3.6 million has been secured.

The UN office said that in the first five months of 2026, 175 casualties from mine explosions were recorded, with children accounting for 75 percent of the victims.
