Pakistan Concludes Ashura Commemorations Peacefully Under Tight Security
—————————————–
Ashura mourning processions and commemorative gatherings concluded peacefully across Pakistan following extensive security arrangements and heightened precautionary measures implemented by authorities during observances marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussein.
Major processions took place in several cities and ended without reports of significant security incidents. In Karachi, the central Ashura procession concluded at Imam Bargah Iranian Hussainiya after beginning at Nishtar Park. In Rawalpindi, the main procession ended at Imam Bargah Qadimi after departing from Imam Bargah Ashiq Hussain in the Teli Mohallah area.
In Lahore, the central procession started from Nisar Haveli and concluded at Karbala Gamay Shah later in the day. Similar commemorative events and mourning gatherings were held in Peshawar, Multan, and multiple cities across southern Punjab, following established routes and schedules.
Authorities deployed large numbers of security personnel, imposed traffic restrictions, and introduced additional monitoring measures to secure processions and facilitate the safe participation of mourners during the commemorations.
Marking the occasion, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari called on citizens to reflect on the lessons associated with Karbala, describing Ashura as a reminder of sacrifice, patience, steadfastness, justice, and human dignity. He encouraged efforts to strengthen peace, social harmony, and national unity while discouraging actions that could fuel division.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the remembrance of Ashura continues to represent values of faith, patience, and social reform. He stated that the sacrifices associated with Imam Hussein and his companions remain an enduring symbol of standing for truth and justice and called for greater unity, tolerance, and mutual respect across society.
Sharif also urged religious leaders, media institutions, and young people to promote messages of peace, stability, and coexistence in Pakistan and across the wider Muslim world.
