For Seven Consecutive Years: Maqtal of Imam Hussein Recited in Dutch in The Hague
——————————————————-
Since 2019, the Dutch city of The Hague has continued to host the recitation of the Maqtal of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, in the Dutch language, as part of a distinctive Ashura initiative aimed at conveying the message of Karbala to younger generations and Dutch-speaking audiences.

This year’s program featured a series of religious, social, and educational lectures in Dutch, focusing on the goals of the Husseini uprising, its reformist message, and its humanitarian dimensions. The event drew notable participation from youth of Iraqi, Turkish, Afghan, and Arab communities, as well as Muslims of other nationalities from various Dutch cities.

The recitation of the Maqtal in Dutch, while preserving the well-known Iraqi style of narrating the events of Karbala, was a key highlight of the program. It helped transfer the emotions and historical meanings of the tragedy into the language of the country, combining the authenticity of Husseini heritage with a modern discourse directed toward European society.

The program also attracted several Dutch attendees, who followed the gatherings and took part in open discussions. Organizers said this reflected the success of the initiative in building bridges of cultural communication and presenting a clear image of Islam and the school of Ahlulbayt, peace be upon them, through dialogue, awareness, and mutual respect.

The experience affirms that the message of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, transcends time, place, and language, and that presenting it to European societies in their national languages is an important step in introducing the eternal human values embodied by the uprising of Karbala.
