The city of Derbent, located in Russia’s Republic of Dagestan, witnessed mourning processions and ceremonies commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, and his companions in the tragedy of Karbala, with broad participation from lovers of Ahlulbayt, peace be upon them, and members of the local community.
Mourning processions moved through several streets of the city in an atmosphere of grief and solidarity. Participants raised black banners and recited elegies and chants recalling the uprising of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, and the sacrifices of the martyrs of Karbala, reaffirming their commitment to the values and principles embodied by the Husseini revolution.
The events also included mourning gatherings and religious lectures addressing the lessons of the tragedy of Karbala, along with traditional Husseini rituals and the distribution of votive food to mourners and attendees.
Participants said the ceremonies represent an annual occasion to renew loyalty to the principles of Ashura and to remember the meanings of sacrifice, reform, and steadfastness in defending truth. They noted that Derbent has a long history of commemorating religious occasions linked to Ahlulbayt, peace be upon them.
Mourning ceremonies are continuing throughout the holy month of Muharram, while the city is also preparing to mark the Arbaeen pilgrimage through various religious, cultural, and service programs involving members of the Islamic community and lovers of Ahlulbayt from different regions.
