Al-Qaeda’s Prominent Ideologue Killed in Syria
————————————
Sami al-Oraydi, also known as Abu Mahmoud al-Shami, one of the most prominent religious ideologues of the extremist Sunni al-Qaeda movement and a founder of the now-dissolved extremist Sunni group Hurras al-Din, was killed in an airstrike carried out by the international coalition forces in northern Idlib.
Al-Oraydi, who had gone into hiding due to security pursuits, was considered an influential figure among Salafi movements. The United States had previously offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest and had designated him as a global terrorist.
It should be mentioned that After the split and the rise of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, al-Uraydi aligned with the more hardline al-Qaeda-loyalist camp that later formed Hurras al-Din in 2018.
