Indian Muslims Voice Concern After Violent Threats Linked to Uttarakhand Communal Row
————————————-
Muslim communities and rights observers in India have expressed concern over inflammatory remarks and threats attributed to a right-wing Hindu figure in Uttarakhand, warning that such rhetoric risks deepening religious polarization and insecurity among minorities.
Local media reports identified the figure as Lalit Sharma, who claimed to head a unit of the Hindu Raksha Dal in Uttarakhand. The controversy is linked to tensions in Kotdwar, where a local man, Deepak Kumar, drew public attention after defending an elderly Muslim shopkeeper who was allegedly pressured by right-wing activists over the use of the word “Baba” in his shop name.
According to local reports, Sharma later issued threats against Kumar, who had become known online as “Mohammad Deepak,” and allegedly announced a cash reward for anyone who would behead him. Police stopped members of the right-wing group from reaching Kotdwar and registered a case in connection with the threats.
Authorities reportedly filed charges under provisions related to promoting enmity, criminal intimidation and intentional insult likely to provoke a breach of peace. Security was also tightened in Kotdwar to prevent further escalation.
The incident has triggered condemnation from journalists, activists and social media users, who called for firm legal action against hate speech and direct incitement to violence. Muslim groups and rights advocates say such rhetoric undermines peaceful coexistence and creates fear among minority communities.
