New Report Reveals “Hidden Culture of Discrimination” Against Muslims in UK Prisons

New research data has revealed that Muslims in Britain’s justice and prison system face structural and discriminatory challenges.

According to documents obtained by the international news outlet Middle East Eye, Muslim prisoners are disproportionately subjected to administrative pressure and strict regulations inside UK prisons.

Citing a comprehensive report by the civil society charity Maslaha, the outlet reported that Muslim prisoners are not only more likely to face severe disciplinary punishments, but are also less likely to benefit from prison jobs, educational programmes and incentive schemes.

The civil rights group criticized the current situation, describing it as a “hidden culture of discrimination,” and called for an urgent review of the system used to grant privileges in prisons across England.

Experts say the findings point to a gap between formally recognized civil rights protections and the realities faced by religious minorities within some public institutions.
