Saudi Study Warns of Rising Psychological Abuse and Bullying Among Children

A new study on children in Saudi Arabia has raised concerns over psychological abuse, violence, bullying, and family neglect, warning of long-term social and mental health consequences for the next generation.

According to Akhbar 24, the King Khalid Foundation study found that children in Saudi Arabia face five main forms of abuse. Psychological abuse ranked highest at 65 percent, followed by exposure to violence at 64 percent, family neglect at 53 percent, physical abuse at 50 percent, and sexual abuse at 10 percent.

The study also found that 52 percent of parents are worried about their children being bullied or abused at school.

The foundation’s report, titled “The Next Generation of Saudis: Childhood in Saudi Arabia,” said childhood experiences vary depending on family conditions, parenting methods, and social environment. Conducted across 18 cities and regions, the study highlighted risks including weak parenting skills, digital addiction, e-cigarette use, childhood obesity, and family breakdown.

Researchers warned that many children and some parents view bullying as a joke or harmless mischief, although experts say it can deeply affect children’s personalities and future development. The report noted that bullying is not limited to schools, but also occurs at home and online.

The study warned that childhood abuse and violence can contribute to depression, anxiety, risky behavior, smoking, and domestic violence later in life.

The report recommended stronger family supervision, parenting education, tighter control on e-cigarette sales, expanded counseling services, and greater support for children’s mental health.
