Belarus Muslims Preserve 700-Year Islamic Heritage in Eastern Europe
————————————-
Belarus is home to one of Eastern Europe’s oldest Muslim communities, with a history dating back nearly 700 years.
According to Muslims Around the World, Islam in Belarus is closely linked to the Lipka Tatars, a Muslim community of Tatar origin that settled in the region between the 14th and 15th centuries. Many were invited to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which then included present-day Belarus, in exchange for military service.
Over the centuries, the Lipka Tatars integrated into local society while preserving their Islamic faith and cultural identity. Despite political changes and restrictions during the Soviet era, the community maintained its religious traditions.
Traces of this heritage remain visible today in old mosques and Muslim cemeteries, including historic sites in western Belarus. One wooden mosque is known as among the few Muslim places of worship that remained open during the Soviet period.
Today, most Belarusian Muslims live in Minsk, where the country’s largest mosque serves as a religious and cultural centre. The community continues to observe prayers, religious festivals, and family traditions, despite challenges such as limited access to halal food in some areas.
The Muslim community of Belarus reflects a little-known chapter of Islam in Europe and a long history of religious coexistence and cultural integration.
