New French Translation and Commentary of the Quran Combines Linguistic Accuracy with Deep Exegesis
————————————
A significant scholarly contribution has been released: a French translation and commentary of the Quran by Dr. Abdelhaq Azouzi, published by Al-Burāq International Publishing. The work was presented at the recent International Publishing and Book Fair in Rabat and is recognized for its combination of precise translation and in-depth interpretation in a comprehensive encyclopedic format.
The publication spans three volumes totaling nearly 3,200 pages, representing over ten years of research and continuous scholarly effort. Dr. Azouzi’s work goes beyond literal translation, addressing linguistic, rhetorical, and spiritual dimensions of the Quran while providing coherent and universal insight into its messages.
Notably, the translation follows both Warsh ‘an Nafi‘ and Hafs ‘an ‘Asim recitations, respecting the diversity of Quranic readings. Each surah is divided into thematic units, includes contextual explanations (asbab al-nuzul), and provides introductory summaries to clarify general objectives for readers.
The commentary draws from classical and contemporary exegeses, emphasizing alignment with religious principles and rational understanding, while incorporating scientific knowledge to illustrate divine patterns in the universe. Linguistic and rhetorical nuances are highlighted to enable French-speaking readers to appreciate the Quran’s depth and eloquence.
The work also addresses major prophetic narratives, key Islamic events, and verses encouraging reflection, and includes explanations based on correct grammatical, rhetorical, and semantic analysis. The translation maintains the Quran’s literary beauty and meaning, offering a resource for both Muslims and non-Muslims to understand Islam’s universal and ethical message.
This edition is considered a first of its kind for integrating translation and tafsir across both major recitation traditions, published in three separate volumes for each. Its goal is to facilitate reflection on the Quran as a divine guide, moral constitution, and foundation for universal moderation, ethics, and human values.
