UN War Crimes Tribunal Rejects Early Release Request by Convicted Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladic

A United Nations war crimes court has denied an early release request by Ratko Mladic, the 84‑year‑old former Bosnian Serb general serving a life sentence for genocide and crimes against humanity committed during the 1992‑95 Bosnian War. The court reaffirmed that Mladic must continue serving his sentence, despite his deteriorating health and claims of severe medical decline.

According to Reuters reporting, Mladic — currently held in the UN detention facility in The Hague — had petitioned for early release on humanitarian and health grounds, citing his advanced age and escalating health issues. However, the tribunal ruled that his current conditions in custody provide adequate medical care and comfort, and that there is no justification for releasing him early under international legal standards.

Mladic was convicted in 2017 by the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals for orchestrating atrocities against Bosnian civilians, including the Srebrenica massacre, in which more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed. His sentencing followed a long period on the run before his 2011 arrest and extradition to The Hague.
