U.S. Muslim Groups Protest Congress Islamophobia Hearings; Warn Against Spread of Fear-Based Policies

Islamic organizations and groups in the United States have condemned recent congressional hearings focused on countering “Sharia law,” describing them as an effort to increase political and psychological pressure on American Muslims.

These hearings come amid growing concerns over rising Islamophobia in U.S. society. According to Reuters, Republican lawmakers, who control both chambers of Congress, held a House Judiciary subcommittee session titled “A Sharia-Free America: Why Political Islam and Sharia Are Incompatible with the U.S. Constitution.”

A similar hearing was previously held in February.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, representing over 50 Muslim organizations nationwide, labeled these sessions as “government weaponization against American Muslims” and warned that such actions are rooted in fear-based politics.

Critics also argue that these hearings promote stereotypes and conspiracy theories about Muslims, further isolating the American Muslim community from the broader society.
