Schools in Lebanon Turned into Refugee Shelters as Displacement Surges Amid Ongoing Conflict
———————————————-
Amid continuing violence and insecurity across Lebanon, numerous schools have been repurposed as temporary shelters for families fleeing conflict, highlighting the deepening humanitarian crisis affecting the country.

Displaced Lebanese civilians, forced from their homes by recent hostilities, have sought refuge in classroom buildings and educational facilities now functioning as emergency accommodation. Photographs and reports show men, women and children settling in school corridors and classrooms, with basic belongings and makeshift bedding as they wait for longer‑term housing solutions.

The use of educational infrastructure as shelters comes as part of a broader displacement trend driven by escalating clashes between Hezbollah and Israeli forces, which have forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes and strained the country’s already fragile social services. More than 500,000 displaced persons have been registered, and tens of thousands are sheltering in schools, stadiums and other public buildings.

Humanitarian agencies warn that the conversion of schools into shelters not only reflects the severity of the displacement crisis but also disrupts education for thousands of children now living in these facilities. The widespread use of schools as emergency housing underscores the urgent need for increased humanitarian support and durable solutions for displaced families in Lebanon.
