Pope Leo Warns Turning War into Religion Incites Global Civilisational Clash

Pope Leo has issued a strong condemnation of war, political manipulation of religion, and sectarian division during a visit to Cameroon, warning that current geopolitical tensions—particularly involving United States, Israel, and Iran—risk being transformed into a dangerous religious confrontation.

Speaking in a region affected by conflict, the Pope described war as a “moral catastrophe” driven by global systems that prioritize militarization over human welfare, Muslim Mirror reported. He criticized leaders who spend vast resources on warfare while poverty and instability persist, and denounced what he called the manipulation of “the very name of God” for political gain.

His remarks come amid escalating tensions linked to US-Israeli military actions involving Iran, where some narratives have framed the conflict as a broader civilizational struggle between Christianity and Islam. The Pope rejected such characterizations, warning they oversimplify complex political disputes and risk fueling global religious polarization.

The comments follow a public dispute with Donald Trump, who had used rhetoric suggesting that entire civilizations were at stake in the confrontation with Iran. The Pope cautioned that such language could escalate conflicts into identity-based struggles with far-reaching consequences, including increased radicalization and strained interfaith relations.

He also highlighted concerns over deepening divisions within Islam, warning that portraying Iran primarily through sectarian lenses could intensify tensions between Sunni and Shia communities.
