Islamic Center in San Jose Provides Free Medical Care and Food During Ramadan

The Evergreen Islamic Center in San Jose, California has launched a Ramadan initiative offering free medical care, dental services, and food distribution to support low-income residents during the holy month of Ramadan.

According to the center’s medical director, the program provides more than food assistance. It also offers healthcare and dental treatment for patients without health insurance. The services are supported by grants from Islamic Relief USA, California Association of Free and Charitable Clinics, and CVS Health, with an annual operating budget of about $50,000 for medical and dental care.

The center’s board chair said demand for food assistance has risen significantly over the past year, increasing by about 50 percent. The program now supports around 135 families each month, compared with 50 families when it first began. More than 30,000 pounds of food were distributed last year at a cost of about $46,000, with additional monthly expenses for supplies and strong reliance on community donations.

Since the opening of its free clinic in 2020, the center has provided basic healthcare services to more than 650 patients, equivalent to nearly $1 million in medical care. Patients are also referred to specialists when necessary.

Center leaders say the initiative also offers emotional and spiritual support, while monthly food distribution events provide families with essential items such as rice, flour, oil, vegetables, and hygiene supplies. The center is also preparing for its annual community iftar gathering during Ramadan to strengthen solidarity within the local community.
