Bangladesh Advances New Waste Management Measures Amid Ongoing Urban Challenges
——————————
Authorities in Bangladesh have recently announced several initiatives aimed at addressing the country’s mounting waste management challenges, particularly in the capital, Dhaka.
Officials say preparations are underway for a waste-to-energy facility at the Aminbazar landfill, a project intended to convert municipal waste into electricity. The plan is currently awaiting final environmental clearance, but if approved, authorities estimate the plant could begin generating power within the next two years. The initiative is seen as part of broader efforts to reduce landfill pressure while producing renewable energy.
Meanwhile, government leaders have renewed calls for cleaner urban environments. The administration has urged city corporations to strengthen sanitation systems, improve waste collection, and take stronger action against pollution in densely populated areas.
Additional initiatives are also targeting worker safety within the waste sector. In Chattogram, more than 1,600 waste collectors recently received protective equipment through a plastic-waste management program designed to improve recycling practices and working conditions.
Despite these steps, environmental analysts warn that rapid urbanization continues to place heavy pressure on municipal services, making long-term investment in recycling infrastructure and modern waste treatment systems increasingly urgent.
