Forty Nations Propose Sanctions as Tensions Escalate at Al-Aqsa and in West Bank

A coalition of forty nations has proposed sweeping sanctions against Israel, including arms embargoes, travel disclosures, and restrictions on settlement goods, in response to what the group called Israel’s “de facto annexation” of the West Bank. The proposal, presented by co-chairs South Africa and Colombia, targets the acceleration of Israeli settlement expansion, which they say undermines Palestinian self-determination.
Among the measures are mandatory disclosures for travelers holding Israeli documents, with those having served in the military subject to secondary screening under war-crimes inadmissibility rules, as well as a ban on importing settlement products and halting the transfer of military supplies. The move follows Israel’s 2023 military campaign in Gaza and subsequent intensification in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which Palestinians view as steps toward formal annexation.
Meanwhile, tensions have surged at Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem. Tens of thousands of Palestinians gathered for Ramadan prayers, but Israel temporarily closed the compound citing safety concerns amid ongoing Israeli and American military operations in Iran. The closure sparked distress among worshipers, with Palestinian officials criticizing the restrictions as disproportionate and a violation of the historic status quo, which allows only Muslims to pray at the site while non-Muslims may visit without performing rituals.
The compound, also known to Jews as the Temple Mount, has long been a flashpoint of religious and political tension. Recent changes, including increased Jewish worship under police escort, have fueled fears of further unrest.
