Five Dead After High-Speed Trains Derail in Southern Spain

Two high-speed trains derailed on Sunday in southern Spain, killing at least five people and injuring others, according to state media and officials, as reported by Reuters. The accident occurred near the town of Adamuz, close to the city of Córdoba, prompting a major emergency response.

Spain’s rail network operator Adif said an Iryo-operated train travelling from Málaga to Madrid derailed shortly after departure and struck the adjacent track. A second train travelling on that line, heading from Madrid to Huelva, also derailed. The crash occurred around 6:50 p.m. local time, about ten minutes into the Málaga–Madrid journey.

Rail services between Madrid and Andalusia were suspended following the incident. Emergency authorities said multiple ambulances and rescue teams were dispatched to the scene, while all rail traffic in the area was halted. Images from the site showed a carriage lying on its side and passengers evacuated nearby as investigations began.
