UK: Rochdale Mosque Expansion Approved Despite ‘Overdevelopment’ Concerns

The Jalalia Jaame Mosque in Greater Manchester has secured approval for a major remodeling and expansion project, according to IQNA News. On December 18, 2025, the local planning committee prioritized community needs over the objections of planning officers who had recommended refusal.
According to council reports, the project is a “legacy” initiative aimed at modernizing the 1970s-era facility on Trafalgar Street. The expansion includes removing the current dome and minaret in favor of modern designs, adding a first-floor extension, and installing a lift for accessibility. Proponents, including Councillor Iftikhar Ahmed, emphasized that the development would provide critical educational spaces for youth and, for the first time, dedicated facilities for women.
While planning officers labeled the proposal “overdevelopment” that might dominate the residential skyline, the committee ruled that the community benefits outweighed these aesthetic concerns. According to mosque representatives, the new design incorporates sustainable technology, including solar panels and rainwater harvesting. Approval was granted with conditions to investigate traffic impacts and protect neighbor privacy.
