Michigan Officials Condemn Anti-Islam Actions in Dearborn

Michigan state and local officials have strongly condemned recent anti-Islam provocations in Dearborn, including an attempted burning of the Quran, emphasizing support for the city’s diverse and cohesive community.

According to the AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA), the condemnation was issued during a broad conference attended by Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, and Mayor Abdullah Hammoud.

Officials noted that the anti-Islam protesters came from outside Michigan and stressed that their views do not reflect Dearborn’s multicultural and safe environment. In recent months, online attacks have falsely depicted Dearborn as an “Islamic colony,” and a Republican candidate briefly launched a campaign against “Sharia implementation” before apologizing following community engagement.

Despite this, anti-Islam activists, led by an extremist figure from Florida, organized a gathering titled “Americans Against Islamization,” during which an attempted Quran burning prompted a brief confrontation with residents and required police intervention.

Mayor Hammoud said the protests were intended to sow division, emphasizing, “Dearborn will not allow itself to become a tool for external political conflicts.” Congresswoman Tlaib described the incidents as “a wave of hate speech” and called for solidarity with the city’s Muslim community.

The officials reaffirmed their commitment to protecting Dearborn’s religious diversity and promoting unity among all residents.
