Major Eruption in Ethiopia Sends Ash Plume Toward Arabian Peninsula

A major volcanic eruption occurred Monday in Ethiopia’s remote Danakil region, sending a massive ash plume across parts of the Arabian Peninsula. The eruption began at 8:30 a.m. local time from Mount Haile Gobi, located about 15 kilometres southeast of the persistently active Erta Ale volcano. Satellite observations showed a towering column of ash rising between 10 and 15 kilometres, along with significant emissions of sulphur dioxide drifting toward southwestern areas of the peninsula.

Authorities say detailed information remains scarce due to the isolation and harsh conditions of the Danakil Depression, leaving satellite data as the primary source for monitoring the event. Mount Haile Gobi has no documented eruptions in thousands of years, suggesting the activity follows an extended dormant period, though historical records for the region are limited.
