At least five people were killed and more than 400 injured after a powerful tornado struck southern Brazil, Arab News reported. The twister hit the town of Rio Bonito do Iguacu in Parana state on Friday, overturning vehicles, destroying homes, and leaving widespread devastation.

Authorities said two people remain missing, with the number expected to rise. Winds reached speeds between 180 and 250 kilometers per hour, according to Parana’s environmental monitoring agency. Civil Defense officials estimated that 80 percent of the town, which has a population of about 14,000, was destroyed.

Local officials described the aftermath as resembling “a war scene.” Parana Governor Ratinho Junior said security forces have been deployed to assist affected communities and monitor conditions as severe storm alerts remain in effect across Parana and neighboring states Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.
