Train Collision in Central India Kills Eight, Injures Several
……………..
At least eight people were killed and several others injured after a passenger train collided with a stationary freight train in India’s central state of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday, according to officials, as reported by Reuters. Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao said the passenger train struck the goods train from behind, severely damaging its front carriages.
Television footage showed the mangled remains of the lead coach partially atop the freight train as police and rescue workers searched for survivors while onlookers gathered nearby. Railway authorities announced that a detailed investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the crash.
India’s vast railway network — the fourth largest in the world — is undergoing a $30 billion modernization drive with new trains and upgraded stations. However, accidents remain frequent, including a major 2023 collision in Odisha that left 288 people dead.
