Sudan Faces Severe Humanitarian Crisis as Conflict, Hunger, and Disease Threaten Millions

Sudan is confronting a multi-layered humanitarian crisis in which ongoing conflict, widespread food insecurity, and emerging public health threats are endangering the lives of millions, particularly women and children, according to Al Jazeera.

In Darfur, local medical reports indicate a spike in suspected dengue fever cases in Nyala. According to Al Jazeera, one clinic admitted more than 40 patients in the past week with symptoms including high fever up to 45°C, nausea, and vomiting. Limited diagnostic equipment has forced physicians to rely on clinical evaluation without laboratory confirmation, while the Ministry of Health has yet to release official figures. Cases of dengue have also been confirmed in other states, including Khartoum, raising fears of a broader outbreak.

Meanwhile, northern Darfur is experiencing severe food insecurity. The Northern Darfur Humanitarian Commission reports that since late August, 229 people have died of hunger, including 171 children and 58 elderly individuals. In Al-Fashir, 675 fatalities and over 1,400 injuries have been recorded, most affecting women and children. Approximately 74,000 people, including 38,000 children, remain under siege, surviving on limited food supplies and a handful of charitable kitchens.

The commission has called for urgent international intervention, including airborne delivery of food and medical aid, warning that continued inaction could trigger a total collapse of the health system and a full-scale humanitarian catastrophe. Experts note that without a political resolution to the internal conflict, Sudan’s crisis will deepen, placing daily life for its citizens in extreme jeopardy.
