Grand Ayatollah Shirazi: The Qur’an Includes Tanzil, Tafsir, and Ta’wil, with its True Interpretation Awaiting Imam al-Mahdi’s Reappearance

Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Husseini al-Shirazi held his daily scholarly session on Saturday, the 18th of Rabi’ al-Thani, 1447 AH. As in previous sessions, His Eminence addressed questions from attendees on various jurisprudential issues.

Regarding how contemporary humanity can benefit from the interpretation (Tafsir) of the Holy Qur’an, Grand Ayatollah Shirazi stated that what the Angel Gabriel brought to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his Household) included the Qur’an itself, along with, in some instances, its revelation (Tanzil), in other instances its interpretation (Tafsir), and in yet others, its esoteric meaning (Ta’wil).

He emphasized that Imam Ali (peace be upon him) had personally recorded all of these aspects—the Qur’an, its Tanzil, Tafsir, and Ta’wil—together in a single manuscript.

His Eminence further narrated a tradition stating that after the passing of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his Household), Imam Ali presented this manuscript, which he referred to as “My Qur’an,” to the community. However, the community rejected it.

He stressed that this comprehensive Qur’an, consisting of these four elements, is currently preserved with Imam al-Mahdi (may Allah hasten his reappearance). He concluded that, based on various narrations, the Imam will reveal this comprehensive Qur’an after his reappearance. Until that time, the true interpretation of the Qur’an remains inaccessible to humanity.
