Taliban Bars University Professors from Promotion Over Dress and Beard Rules
……………..
The Taliban’s Ministry of Higher Education has issued a directive denying academic promotions to university professors who fail to comply with the group’s dress and grooming requirements. According to an official document, promotion files will be delayed for faculty members whose appearance and conduct “do not align with Sharia,” and university heads have been instructed to ensure full adherence before submitting applications.
The decision coincides with the start of Afghanistan’s 2025 academic year and enforces strict dress codes for both teachers and students, including mandatory traditional clothing, turbans or caps, and a ban on shaving. Since taking power in 2021, the Taliban has imposed sweeping restrictions on education, prompting concerns over declining academic freedom and the departure of many scholars.
