Meta Introduces Paid Ad-Free Option for Facebook and Instagram in the UK

Meta has launched a subscription service offering UK users an ad-free experience on Facebook and Instagram. Web users will pay £2.99 per month, while mobile users will be charged £3.99, with only one fee applied if accounts are linked, according to The Guardian.
The move comes after regulatory pressure over Meta’s targeted advertising practices. The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) welcomed the change, saying it gives users a genuine choice to opt out of personalized ads.
The subscription model mirrors a similar service in the EU, which previously led to a €200 million fine for Meta due to non-compliance with the Digital Markets Act. The UK’s approach reflects a more business-friendly regulatory stance.
Meta confirmed the service will roll out in the coming weeks, allowing users to choose between continuing with personalized ads or subscribing to the ad-free option.
