Albania Launches First Islamic Art and Heritage Museum in Tirana
…………
The Albanian capital, Tirana, officially announced the creation of the country’s first Islamic Art and Heritage Museum during an international conference on September 16, organized by the Konak Institute and attended by experts from Europe and the Islamic world.
Prime Minister Edi Rama emphasized that Islamic art and heritage form an integral part of Albania’s history and identity, noting that the museum will complement other cultural institutions such as the National Theater, National Gallery, and Historical Museum.
The museum will be housed in the historic Tophtani Palace, which will undergo careful restoration to preserve its authenticity. Spanish architect Jesús Hernández outlined plans for minimal architectural interventions, ensuring the building retains its historical value.
The museum will display rare manuscripts, artworks, and Islamic cultural artifacts, serving as a hub for cultural dialogue and education. Officials said the initiative aims to promote cultural tourism and highlight the significance of Islamic heritage as a core element of Albanian national identity.
