Israeli Airstrikes in Yemen Kill 35 Following Houthi Drone Attack
…………….
At least 35 people were killed and over 130 injured in Israeli airstrikes across Yemen on Wednesday, following a recent drone attack by Houthi forces that struck an airport in southern Israel, Arab News reported. The majority of casualties occurred in the capital, Sanaa, where strikes targeted a military headquarters and a fuel station, according to the Houthi-run health ministry.
The airstrikes mark a significant escalation in tensions between Israel and the Houthi group, which has launched repeated missile and drone attacks in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Houthi officials confirmed that a military building in central Sanaa and nearby homes were damaged, with rescue efforts ongoing.
Additional strikes were reported in Hazm, the capital of Jawf province, hitting a government facility. A fuel station supplying hospitals was also targeted, according to the Houthi-run Yemen Petroleum Company. Residents reported multiple loud explosions and plumes of smoke over Sanaa.
In response, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree stated that surface-to-air missiles were launched at Israeli aircraft. Houthi-backed President Mahdi Al-Mashat vowed continued retaliation, warning of further responses. Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for sanctions and a partial trade suspension against Israel over its actions in Gaza, increasing global scrutiny.
