UK Moves Undocumented Migrants from Hotels to Military Barracks

The UK Ministry of Defence has announced that undocumented migrants previously housed in hotels will be relocated to military barracks, amid growing public backlash over rising costs.
According to Sky News, the government had been spending nearly £6 million per day to accommodate around 45,000 asylum seekers in hotels. Mounting criticism intensified after an incident in the town of Epping, where a migrant was accused of assaulting a 14-year-old girl.
Defence Secretary John Healey stated that the move is intended to cut costs and expedite processing. “The status of these individuals must be reviewed quickly so that decisions on deportation can be made without delay,” he said.
British media reported that Prime Minister Keir Starmer has faced a sharp decline in popularity over what critics describe as his administration’s failure to effectively manage the migration crisis.
The transfer to military facilities is expected to ease financial pressure but has also raised concerns among rights advocates, who warn that conditions in barracks may not be suitable for long-term housing of vulnerable asylum seekers.
