Afghan AI researcher wins gold medal for medical innovation at Silicon Valley invention festival

Afghan artificial intelligence researcher Fereidoun Farzad has won a gold medal at the 2026 Silicon Valley International Invention Festival in California for developing an AI-powered platform aimed at improving wound healing and reducing scarring through precision regenerative medicine.
Farzad received the award on August 15 in Santa Clara for his project, “AI-Driven Digital Twin Platform for Scar-Free Precision Wound Regeneration.” The invention combines artificial intelligence with digital twin technology to digitally simulate wound-healing processes and support the development of more accurate treatment approaches.
The platform uses virtual models of biological processes that can be analyzed with real-world data, allowing researchers and clinicians to study tissue regeneration and potential treatment outcomes before applying interventions.
Farzad said the project was inspired by the question of whether artificial intelligence could help make wound treatment more precise while reducing permanent scars. He added that the research developed through months of testing, refinement, and collaboration into a platform capable of modeling complex healing processes.
Due to visa restrictions and circumstances affecting Afghan researchers, Farzad and his team participated in the competition remotely rather than traveling to California. Despite this, their project received the festival’s top recognition.
The award marks Farzad’s second international gold medal in innovation competitions. He previously received a gold medal at the ArshMedis International Invention Festival in Russia for another research project.
Farzad said the recognition demonstrates the ability of Afghan researchers to contribute to global science and technology despite challenges facing academic collaboration and international mobility.
He expressed hope that the achievement would encourage more Afghan students to pursue careers in artificial intelligence, science, and research, adding that he wants Afghanistan to be associated internationally with innovation and scientific progress alongside its humanitarian challenges.
The researcher said his long-term goal is to see more Afghan scientists and students participate in international universities, laboratories, and technology projects, contributing to the development of new knowledge and solutions.
