United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, marking the International Day for People of African Descent on August 31, called for justice, equality, and dignity for African-descendant communities.

According to The Guardian, Guterres highlighted the “long shadow of slavery and colonialism,” pointing to its continued impact on racial discrimination, economic inequality, and the digital divide.

He stressed that 80 years after the UN Charter and six decades after the Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the moment has come to redress past wrongs.
