Based on information from the UN, a severe humanitarian emergency is escalating in Sudan, with attacks on civilians and a looming crisis of unprecedented scale, Anadolu Agency reported.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed alarm over the “relentless attacks” by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the city of El Fasher, warning of potential violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law. The UN has verified that at least 125 civilians have been killed in the area since August 11, although the actual death toll is believed to be higher. Guterres has called for an immediate ceasefire and the safe delivery of aid to the city, which has been under siege for more than 500 days.

In a related warning, a senior UN official, Edem Wosornu, has stated that nearly two-thirds of Sudan’s population—approximately 30 million people—are facing a humanitarian emergency and are in desperate need of assistance. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has led to widespread displacement, with at least 850,000 people seeking refuge in Sudan and neighboring Chad.

In addition to the violence, the humanitarian situation is dire. A cholera outbreak has been ravaging the country for over a year, with more than 50,000 confirmed cases and at least 1,350 deaths. An estimated 680,000 people have experienced extreme famine, and 70 aid trucks are currently stalled, unable to deliver essential supplies to El Fasher. The capital city of Khartoum is described as a “ghost town,” littered with explosive remnants of war. The UN has also reported a “gender emergency,” citing widespread child rapes and killings.
